REMEMBERING RUMI

Remembering Jalal-ud-Din Rumi

Cry To Your Creator!
Let Body Need Dwindle,
And Soul Decisions Increase! – Rumi

(By: M. Javed Naseem)

“Out of the Quran I draw the marrow
And throw away the bones to the dogs.”
                                                  – Rumi
(The reference to “dogs” is to those who quibble unnecessarily on superficial issues, it is not used in a derogatory sense.)
=======

In the middle of 13th century, a young Persian scholar met a stranger who asked him a strange question that changed his life for ever. That stranger was from the city of Tabriz, a wandering Dervish who had traveled throughout the Middle East, searching and praying for someone who was worthy of his company. There are various versions of this very interesting encounter but it is hard to verify the facts.
The stranger said: ‘Can you endure my company?’
The young scholar, a learned professor, answered: ‘What would you offer in return?’
Stranger: ‘My head!’
Young scholar: ‘The one you seek is Jalal-ud-Din of Konya.’
Stranger: ‘Can I ask you a question?’
Young scholar: ‘You’ll get an answer.’
When the stranger asked the question, the young scholar fainted to the ground. According to the researchers, the stranger asked: ‘Who was greater, Muhammad or Bestami? For Bestami had said, “How great is my glory”, whereas Muhammad had acknowledged in his prayer to God, “We do not know You as we should”.
The young scholar sensed the depth out of which the question came and fell to the ground. When he regained his senses, he answered that Muhammad was greater, because Bestami had taken one sip of the divine and stopped there as if he was lost, whereas for Muhammad the journey was always unfolding.
This encounter brought the two together as friends and they became inseparable. The stranger was Shams Tabrizi, and the young scholar was Rumi – Jalal-ud-Din Rumi, who is considered the greatest mystic poet of the East.

‘Rumi’ means ‘Roman’ or ‘from Rome’. But the world-famous Iranian Sufi poet and mystic, Rumi, was not from Rome. He was actually born as ‘Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi’ on 30th September, 1207, in Wakhsh, province of Balkh, which is divided today between Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It was then part of the Persian Empire. In Iran and Afghanistan, he was commonly known as Jalaluddin Muhammad Balkhi. He became Rumi, when his family emigrated from Balkh to Konya, Turkey (Roman Anatolia) sometime between 1215 and 1220, the period of Mongol invasion of Central Asia. All his works are written in Persian language. Today, he is known as ‘Maulana Rumi’ (Maulana means a religious scholar or a learned professor).
Rumi’s father, Baha-ud-Din Walad, was a theologian, jurist and a mystic. The profession of the family for several generations was that of Islamic preachers of the liberal Hanafi rite and this family tradition was continued by Rumi. Baha-ud-Din was the head of a Madrassah (school) and when he died, Jalal-ud-Din took over the position at the age of 25. One of Baha-ud-Din’s students, Sayyed Burhan-ud-Din Muhaqiq Termazi continued to train Rumi in the Shariah & Tariqah and Sufism. Jalal-ud-Din Rumi was influenced first by his own father’s spiritual writings, and then by the famous mystic poets of Persia (Iran), Sanai and Attar.
Shams Tabrizi wrote mystic poems. Rumi called the huge collection of his odes and quatrains “The Works of Shams Tabrizi”. Their great friendship also generated some controversies and jealousy. On one night of December 1248, when Rumi and Shams were having mystical discussion, somebody called Shams to the back door. He went out and never came back. Nobody ever saw him again. The legend is that he was murdered. So, Shams indeed gave his head for the privilege of mystical company.

“In the slaughterhouse of love, they kill
Only the best, none of the weak or deformed.
Don’t run away from this dying.
Whoever’s not killed for love, is dead meat.”
                                                        – Rumi

(Rumi's tomb/grave in Konya, Turkey)

After the death of Shams Tabrizi, a goldsmith named Saladin became close friend of Rumi, whom he addressed his poems. And when Saladin died, he was replaced by Rumi’s own disciple and favorite student Husam. For the last 12 years of his life, Rumi dictated the six volumes of his masterpiece “Masnawi” (or Mathnawi) to Husam. Rumi died on 17th December, 1273. He was buried in Konya (Turkey), beside his father, and over his remains a splendid shrine was erected. His shrine has become a place of pilgrimage for all Rumi lovers.

Following his death, his followers and his son Sultan Walad founded the ‘Mevlevi Order’, also known as the ‘Order of the Whirling Dervishes’, famous for its ‘Sufi dance’ known as the ‘Sama’ ceremony.

Wikipedia adds:
Rumi’s works are written in Persian and his ‘Mathnawi’ remains one of the purest literary glories of Persia, and one of the crowning glories of the Persian language. His original works are widely read today in their original language across the Persian-speaking world (Iran, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and parts of Persian speaking Central Asia). Translations of his works are very popular in other countries. His poetry has influenced Persian literature as well as Urdu, Punjabi, Turkish and some other Iranic, Turkic and Indic languages written in Perso-Arabic script (e.g., Pashto, Ottoman Turkish, Chagatai and Sindhi). Rumi’s importance is considered to transcend national and ethnic borders. His poems have been widely translated into many of the world’s languages and transposed into various formats. In 2007, he was described as the “most popular poet in America”.

(Excerpts from: “The Essential Rumi”, Translated by Coleman Barks & John Moyne, Published by Castle Books, Edison, NJ, USA)

CRY TO YOUR CREATOR!

The cloud weeps, and then the garden sprouts.
The baby cries, and the mother’s milk flows.
The nurse of creation has said: Let them cry a lot.

This rain-weeping and sun-burning,
twine together to make us grow.
Keep your intelligence white-hot, and your grief glistening,
so your life will stay fresh.
Cry easily like a little child.

Let body need dwindle,
and soul decisions increase.
Diminish what you give your physical self.
Your spiritual eye will begin to open.

When the body empties and stays empty,
God fills it with musk and mother-of-pearl.
That way a man gives his dung,
and gets purity.
 ---------

TENDING TWO SHOPS

Don’t run around this world
Looking for a hole to hide in.
There are wild beasts in every cave!
If you live with mice, the cat claws will find you.

The only real rest comes
When you are alone with God.

You own two shops, and you run back and forth.
Try to close the one that’s a fearful trap,
Getting always smaller.
Checkmate, this way. Checkmate that.

Keep open the shop
Where you’re not selling fish-hooks anymore.
You are the free-swimming fish.
-----------

Think that you’re gliding out from the face of a cliff
Like an eagle. Think you’re walking
Like a tiger walks by himself in the forest.
You’re most handsome when you’re after food.

Spend less time with nightingales and peacocks.
One is just a voice, the other just a color.
----------

There is a way between voice and presence
Where information flows.
In disciplined silence it opens.
With wandering talk it closes.
----------

PATIENCE

Friendship and loyalty have patience
As the strength of their connections.
Feeling lonely and ignoble indicates
That you haven’t been patient.

Be with those who mix with God
As honey blends with milk, and say,
“Anything that comes and goes, rises and sets,
is not what I love.”
(Prophet Abraham’s quote in search of God)

Live in the One who created the prophets,
Else you’ll be like a caravan fire left
To flare itself out alone beside the road.
----------

EMPTINESS

Consider the difference
In our actions and God’s actions.
We often ask: “Why did you do that?”
Or “Why did I act like that?”

We do act, and yet everything we do
Is God’s creative action.
We look back and analyze the events
Of our lives, but there is another way
Of seeing, a backward-and-forward-at-once
Vision, that is not rationally understandable.

Only God can understand it.
Satan made the excuse: ‘You caused me to fall’,
Whereas Adam said to God: ‘We did this
To ourselves.’ After this repentance,
God asked Adam: ‘Since all is within
My foreknowledge, why didn’t you
Defend yourself with that reason?’

Adam answered: ‘I was afraid,
And I wanted to be reverent’

Whoever acts with respect will get respect.
Whoever brings sweetness will be served almond cake.
Good women are drawn to be with good men.

Honor your friend.
Or treat him rudely, and see what happens!

Love, tell an incident now
That will clarify this mystery
Of how we act freely, and are yet
Compelled. One hand shakes with palsy,
Another shakes because you slapped it away.

Both tremblings come from God,
But you feel guilty for the one,
And what about the other?

These are intellectual questions.
The spirit approaches the matter differently.
Omar once had a friend, a scientist, Bu’l-Hakam,
Who was flawless at solving empirical problems,
But he could not follow Omar
Into the area of illumination and wonder

Now I return to the text, “And He is with you,
Wherever you are,” but when have I ever left it!
Ignorance is God’s prison.
Knowing is God’s palace.

We sleep in God’s unconsciousness.
We wake in God’s open hand.
We weep God’s rain.
We laugh God’s lightening.

Fighting and peacefulness
Both take place within God.

Who are we then
In this complicated world-tangle,
That is really just the single, straight line
Down at the beginning of ALLAH?

Nothing.
We are emptiness.
------------

When you are with everyone but me,
You’re with no one.
When you are with no one but me,
You’re with everyone.

Instead of being so bound up with everyone,
Be everyone.
When you become that many, you’re nothing.
Empty.
----------------

FOOD

A lover’s food is the love of bread,
Not the bread. No one who really loves,
Loves existence.

Lovers have nothing to do with existence.
They collect the interest without the capital.
No wings, yet they fly all over the world. No hands,
But they carry the polo ball from the field.
-----------

BOOGEYMAN

… which reminds me of the mother who tells her child,
“When you’re walking through the graveyard at night
And you see a boogeyman, run at it,
And it will go away.”

“But what,” replies the child,
“If the boogeyman’s mother has told it
to do the same thing?
Boogeymen have mothers too.”
-------------

BISMILLAH

It’s a habit of yours to walk slowly.
You hold a grudge for years.
With such heaviness, how can you be modest?
With such attachments, do you expect to arrive anywhere?

Be wide as the air to learn a secret.
Right now you’re equal portions clay
And water, thick mud.

Abraham learned how the sun and moon and the stars all set.
He said: No longer will I try to assign partners for God.

You are so weak. Give up to grace!
The ocean takes care of each wave till it gets to shore.
You need more help than you know.
You are trying to live your life in open scaffolding.

Say Bismillah, In the name of God,
As the priest does with a knife when he offers an animal.
Bismillah your old self to find your real name!

---------

THE VIGIL

Don’t go to sleep one night.
What you most want will come to you then.
Warmed by a sun inside, you’ll see wonders.
Tonight, don’t put your head down.

Be tough, and strength will come.
That which adoration adores, appears at night.
Those asleep may miss it.

One night Moses stayed awake
And asked, and saw a light in a tree.
Then he walked at night for ten years,
Until finally he saw the whole tree illuminated.

Muhammad rode his horse through the night-sky.
The day is for work. The night for love.
Don’t let someone bewitch you.

Some people sleep at night. But not lovers.
They sit in the dark and talk to God, who told David:
‘Those who sleep all night every night
And claim to be connected to us, they lie.’
------------

MISC.

When I am with you, we stay up all night.
When you’re not here, I can’t go to sleep.
Praise God for these two insomnias!
And the difference between them.
 ----------

The minute I heard my first love story
I started looking for you,
not knowing how blind that was.
Lovers don’t finally meet somewhere.
They’re in each other all along.
 ----------

We are the mirror as well as the face in it.
We are tasting the taste this minute of eternity.
We are pain and what cures pain, both.
We are the sweet cold water and the jar that pours.
 ----------

I want to hold you close like a lute,
So we can cry out with loving.
You would rather throw stones at a mirror?
I am your mirror, and here are the stones!
 ------------

A craftsman pulled a reed from the reed-bed,
Cut holes in it, and called it a human being.
Since then, it’s been wailing a tender agony
Of parting, never mentioning the skill
that gave it life as a flute.
 ------------

Humble living does not diminish. It fills.
Going back to a simpler self gives wisdom.
When a man makes up a story for his child,
He becomes a father and a child together, listening.
 ---------------

Gamble everything for love,
If you’re a true human being.
If not, leave this gathering.
Halfheartedness doesn’t reach into majesty.
You set out to find God, but then you keep stopping
for long periods, at mean-spirited roadhouses.
-----------

Do you think I know what I’m doing?
That for one breath or half-breath I belong to myself?
As much as a pen knows what it’s writing,
Or the ball can guess where it’s going next.
-------

THE GUEST HOUSE

This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
Some momentary awareness comes
As an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they’re a crowd of sorrows,
Who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture,
Still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out for some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,
Meet them at the door laughing, and invite them in.
Be grateful for whoever comes,
Because each has been sent as a guide from beyond.
---------

GNATS INSIDE THE WIND

Some gnats come from the grass to speak with Solomon.
“O Solomon, you are the champion of the oppressed.
You give justice to the little guys, and they don’t get
Any littler than us! We are tiny metaphors
For frailty. Can you defend us?”

“Who has mistreated you?”
“Our complaint is against the wind.”
“Well,” says Solomon, “you have pretty voices,
You gnats, but remember, a judge cannot listen
To just one side. I must hear both litigants.”
“Of course,” agree the gnats.

Summon the East Wind!” calls out Solomon,
And the wind arrives almost immediately.
What happened to the gnat plaintiffs? Gone!

Such is the way of every seeker who comes to complain
At the High Court. When the presence of God arrives,
Where are the seekers? First there’s dying,
Then union, like gnats inside the wind.
-----------

LOVE DOGS

One night a man was crying: Allah! Allah!
His lips grew sweet with the praising,
Until a cynic said: So! I have heard you
Calling out, but have you ever
Gotten any response?

The man had no answer to that.
He quit praying and fell into a confused sleep.
He dreamed he saw Khidr, the guide of souls,
In a thick, green foliage: Why did you stop praising?
“Because I’ve never heard anything back.”

“This longing you express is the return message.”
The grief you cry out from, draws you toward union.
Your pure sadness that wants help, is the secret cup.
Listen to the moan of a dog for its master.
That whining is the connection.

There are love dogs
No one knows the names of.
Give your life to be one of them!
---------

MOSES AND THE SHEPHERD

Moses heard a shepherd on the road praying:
“God, where are you? I want to help you, to fix your shoes
And comb your hair. I want to wash your clothes
And pick the lice off. I want to bring you milk
To kiss your little hands and feet when it’s time
For you to go to bed. I want to sweep your room
And keep it neat. God, my sheep and goats
Are yours. All I can say, remembering you,
Is ‘ayyyy’ and ‘ahhhhhhhhh’.”

Moses could stand it no longer. “Who are you talking to?”
“The one who made us, and made the earth and made the sky.”
“Don’t talk about shoes and socks with God!
And what’s this with ‘your little hands and feet’?
Such blasphemous familiarity sounds like
You’re chatting with your uncles.”

“Only something that grows, needs milk.
Only someone with feet needs shoes. Not God!
Even if you meant God’s human representatives,
As when God said: ‘I was sick, and you did not visit me’,
Even then this tone would be foolish and irreverent.”

“Use appropriate terms. Fatima is a fine name for a woman,
but if you call a man Fatima, it’s an insult.
Body-and-birth language are right for us on this side of the river,
But not for addressing the origin, not for Allah.”

The shepherd repented and tore his clothes and sighed
And wandered out into the desert.
A sudden revelation came then to Moses. God’s voice:
“You have separated me from one of my own.
Did you come as a Prophet to unite, or to sever?
I have given each being a separate and unique way
of seeing and knowing and saying that knowledge.”

“What seems wrong to you is right for him.
What is poison to one is honey to someone else.
Purity and impurity, sloth and diligence in worship,
These mean nothing to me.
I am apart from all that.”

“Ways of worship are not to be ranked as better
Or worse than one another.
Hindus do Hindu things.
The Dravidian Muslims in India do what they do.
It’s all praise, and it’s all right.”

“It’s not me that’s glorified in acts of worship,
It’s the worshipers! I don’t hear the words they say.
I look inside at the humility.
That broken-open lowliness is the reality,
Not the language!  Forget phraseology,
I want burning, burning.”

“Be friends with your burning. Burn up your thinking
And your forms of expression!
Moses, those who pay attention to ways of behaving
And speaking are one sort.
Lovers, who burn, are another.”

Don’t impose a property tax on a burned-out village.
Don’t scold the Lover. The ‘wrong’ way he talks
is better than a hundred ‘right’ ways of others.
Inside the Kaaba it doesn’t matter which direction
you point your prayer rug!

The ocean diver doesn’t need snowshoes!
The love-religion has no code or doctrine. Only God.
So, the ruby has nothing engraved on it!
It doesn’t need markings.

God began speaking deeper mysteries to Moses.
Vision and words, which cannot be recorded here,
poured into and through him.
He left himself and came back.

He went to eternity and came back here.
Many times this happened.
It is foolish of me to try and say this.
If I did say it, it would uproot our human intelligence.
It would shatter all writing pens.

Moses ran after the shepherd.

ALLAH IS TALKING TO YOU

In The Holy Quran
Allah Is Talking To You!

Do You Understand What HE Is Telling You?

(By: M. Javed Naseem)

(Dedication: To Susan Khan. May Allah bless you with patience and good health!)

“Follow (O men!) the revelation given unto you from
your Lord, and follow not, as friends or protectors, other
than Him. Little it is you remember of admonition.”
(al-Quran 7:3-5)

"Did I not enjoin on you, O you Children of Adam, that
you should not worship Satan; for that he was to you an
enemy avowed? And that you should worship Me, (for
that) this was the straight way? But he did lead astray
a great multitude of you. Did you not, then, understand?”
(al-Quran 36:60-62)

Is this message not clear enough for you? What is in this command of the Almighty that we don’t understand? Is there anything ambiguous or confusing? No, certainly not. It is a command in a very plain language. No confusion at all! The message is loud and clear – follow the commands of your Creator (not the Devil’s) and reflect upon them.

“This is a clear message for mankind in order that they
may be warned thereby, and that they may know that He is
only One God, and that men of understanding may take heed.”
(al-Quran 14:52)

“This (Quran) is a declaration for mankind, a guidance
and an admonition unto those who ward off (evil).”
(al-Quran 3:138)

The Holy Quran is the Word of God (Allah) and that means that Allah is talking to you (through its verses). There is a message in it. Allah is not talking to Himself; HE is talking to us – the mankind! But do we understand what Allah says and commands us to do to benefit from His mercy and blessings?

“(This is) a Scripture that We have Revealed unto you,
full of blessing that they may ponder its revelations,
and that men of understanding may reflect.”
(al-Quran 38:29)

Allah invites us to think and reflect upon His revelations; meditate on them; study the Holy Quran; follow the instructions and apply them to our daily life.
Majority of the Muslims in this world are not Arabs. They don’t speak/understand Arabic and the Quran is revealed in Arabic language. Therefore, their only alternative (solution) is to follow it through translation in their native language. That takes care of the problem up to the maximum of 90%. The remaining 10% can always play mischief. In this space of 10%, there are misinterpretations, wrong translations, wrong sense of the words, use of misappropriate words, misunderstanding idiomatic phrases, choosing the multi-meaning words that create misunderstanding, misleading phrases, etc., etc.
How to overcome this serious problem? The only solution is to learn Arabic language – at least the basic knowledge so that you can recognize the original Arabic word and compare its translations. That will remove all chances of doubtful translation and misinterpretation. You don’t need to be a master of Arabic to achieve that goal. But if you become a ‘master’ in the process, it’ll be great!
The second Caliph of Islam, Umar bin al-Khattab (r.a.a.= razi Allah anh) said: “Learn Arabic! It is part of your Faith (Iman).” And very rightly so! Allah says:

“We have made it a Quran in Arabic, that you may
be able to understand (and learn wisdom).”
(al-Quran 43:3)

“Had We sent this as a Quran (in the language) other
than Arabic, they would have said: "Why are not its
verses explained in detail? What! (a Book) not in Arabic
and (a Messenger) an Arab?" Say: "It is a Guide and a
Healing to those who believe; and for those who
believe not, there is a deafness in their ears, and it is
blindness in their (eyes). They are (as it were) being
called from a place far distant!"
(al-Quran 41:44)

“Thus have We sent this down - an Arabic Quran - and
explained therein in detail some of the warnings, in order
that they may fear Allah, or that it may cause
their remembrance (of Him).”
(al-Quran 20:113)

It was God’s decision to reveal the Quran in Arabic, therefore, we don’t need to look for justification or reasons behind it. It would be a lengthy ‘academic’ discussion. I leave it to those so-called ‘scholars’ (‘ulema’) who have nothing else to do. What is important for me is that Allah sent this message for us and we should implement it – ponder over it, reflect upon it and act upon it. Allah says that He made the Quran easy for us:

“Verily, We have made this (Qur'an) easy, in your
tongue, in order that they may give heed.”
(al-Quran 44:58)

Allah knows that we are ignorant, arrogant, stubborn and wicked. We always look for excuses to get away without taking any responsibility. And if we do take responsibility, we look for short-cuts (compromising the wisdom of the message). Generally, we are very ungrateful to our Creator and Sustainer. But Allah reminds us on every occasion that we should remember Him and glorify Him, as does everything in the Heavens and on Earth.
“It is We Who have placed you with authority on earth, and
provided you therein with means for the fulfillment of your life.
Small are the thanks that you give! It is We Who created you
and gave you shape; then We bade the angels
prostrate to Adam, and they prostrate. …”
(al-Quran 7:10-11).

The revelations are clearly explained in the Holy Quran. If we say that we don’t understand them, that would be a lame excuse. Everybody understands them but, somehow, tries to ignore them or avoid them. We, as Muslims, don’t have the courage to say that we don’t want to obey the commands of Allah. We always say that we believe them to be true but still we don’t follow them. This is simple disobedience. At the same time, it amounts to rejection of God’s message. On top of it, we don’t even thank Allah for all the blessings we still enjoy. Allah is not happy with this attitude:

If you reject (Allah), Truly Allah has no need of you; but
He likes not ingratitude from His servants. If you are
grateful, He is pleased with you. No bearer of burdens
can bear the burden of another. In the end, to your Lord
is your return, when He will tell you the truth of all
that you did (in this life); for He knows well
all that is in (men's) hearts.”
(al-Quran 39:7)

We are very cunning and conniving. We ignore the Almighty in almost everything we do to enjoy a comfortable and happy life on this earth. We don’t like discipline, rules and regulations. We want to be ‘free’ of every obligation. In this process we don’t even notice that we are being unjust to ourselves as well as others. Allah commands us:

“Say: ‘My Lord has commanded justice; and that you set
your whole selves (to Him) at every time and place of prayer,
and call upon Him, making your devotion sincere as in His sight;
such as He created you in the beginning, so shall you return."
(al-Quran 7:29)

Allah tells us to be honest in our dealings and treatment to others. We should do what we say; and we should portray what we really are. Hiding the truth and pretending to promote the truth, while in fact we are promoting the falsehood/lies, is strictly forbidden. Those who do that, would be punished. We cannot escape from the wrath of Allah if we do evil and spread (or help to spread) corruption:

“The curse of Allah is on evil-doers.”
(al-Quran 7:44)

“O you who believe! Why SAY you that which you DO not?
It is most hateful in the sight of Allah that
you SAY that (something) which you DO not.”
(al-Quran 61:2-3)

The message of God is universal. It is very simple, clear and binding on all of us. It can be summed up in two words: Obey Me! This is the message of the Greatest Creator to the entire Creation, from the beginning till the end. In Arabic language this message is called ‘Islam’. It was the same message delivered by all other messengers or prophets of God in other languages. Islam means unconditional surrender or submission to the Will of God (or Allah). Those who do, they are called ‘Muslims’. Islam is not in the name; it is in the actions. If we believe in Allah, we should show it in every way.

If someone tells you that ‘everybody believes in God but you Muslims do it differently’. Tell him/her that you don’t do it differently than the followers of other prophets or messengers of God. We do it the way it should be done. Allah tells us:

“And before this, was the Book of Moses as a guide and a
mercy. And this Book confirms (it) in the Arabic tongue; to
admonish the unjust, and as Glad Tidings to those who do right.”
(al-Quran 46:12)

This means that we are not different as followers of God’s message than the followers of Prophet Moses. Allah even tells us that it was the same message/religion that was followed by the people during the times of Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and his tribes, Moses, Jesus, and all other prophets/messengers of God.

“Say: We believe in Allah, and the revelation given to us,
and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the Tribes, and
that given to Moses and Jesus, and that given to (all) prophets
from their Lord; we make no difference between one and
another of them. And we bow to Allah in Islam.”
(Quran 2:136)

We are not different from those nations. Only the account of their submission, devotion, prayers and beliefs are not correctly recorded by the ‘men’ who wanted to be different. These false records/narrations created different religions, sects and promoted disunity that resulted in animosity among different groups. The message, as delivered by the prophets or messengers of God, was very clear and was based on truth. But those who did not want to follow it honestly and sincerely, they corrupted it, edited it, changed it and then manipulated it. Allah says:

“Then shall we question those to whom Our message
was sent and those by whom We sent it.”
(al-Quran 7:6)

That means that Allah, on the Day of Judgment, will question those prophets and messengers about their deliverance of His message in front of their nations. And then Allah will also question us (and all other nations) whether we received His message or not; and if we did (we surely did), what did we do about it? How did we treat it and how did we implement it?

“He merges night into day, and he merges day into night,
and he has subjected the sun and the moon (to His Law);
each one runs its course for a term appointed. Such is Allah
your Lord; to Him belongs all dominion. And those whom
you invoke besides Him have not the least power.”
(al-Quran 35:13)

God, the Almighty, has revealed to us His signs and, through His messengers and Scriptures, has explained to us how He created us, this universe and everything in it. If we, as believers, are not honest or sincere, we’ll question those signs and try to rationalize them. You are either a believer or unbeliever. There is no middle ground. A believer should see His signs and believe! Simple as that!

“Such are the Signs of Allah, which We recite to you
in Truth; then in what exposition will they believe after
(rejecting) Allah and His Signs? Woe to each sinful dealer
in Falsehoods. He hears the Signs of Allah recited to him,
yet is obstinate and lofty, as if he had not heard them.
Then announce to him a penalty grievous!”
(al-Quran 45:6-8)

“These are clear evidences to men and a Guidance
and Mercy to those of assured Faith.”
(al-Quran 45:20)

“And on the Day that the unbelievers will be placed
before the Fire, (they will be asked,) "Is this not the Truth?"
They will say: "Yes, by our Lord!" (One will say:) "Then
taste you the penalty because you disbelieved (Truth)!"
(al-Quran 46:34)

Allah has explained to us that He created this universe (heavens and earth and everything between them) in truth and with a purpose. Our lives here on this earth are part of a trial. It is not a sport, nor a past-time. We need to qualify for the next life (heaven or hell) right here during a fixed period of time (our lifespan). We need to remember (worship) and obey our Lord, the Greatest Creator, and take care of fellow human beings. We need to live our lives the way He told us to. If we fail this test, we are doomed. He warns us in the Holy Quran:
“Not without purpose did We create heaven and earth, and
all what is between them! That is the opinion of unbelievers!
But woe to the unbelievers because of the Fire (of Hell)!”
(al-Quran 38:27)

“We created not the heavens, the earth, and all that is
between them, merely in (idle) play. We created them not except
for just ends (truth), but most of them do not understand.”
(al-Quran 44:38-39)

Allah tells us to be mindful of His blessings and mercy upon us; even upon those who don’t believe in God! He gives them provision, sustenance, air to breathe, water to drink and food to eat. He is not sending us any ‘bill’ for that to pay. We should not take things for granted. He makes us feel at every step of life that He is there, and should be appreciated. How can we then deny Him?

“O men! Call to mind the grace of Allah unto you!
Is there a creator, other than Allah, to give you
sustenance from heaven or earth? There is no god but Him.
How then are you deluded away from the Truth?”
(al-Quran 35:3)

As Creation, we need the Creator to survive. We are so helpless and dependant that we cannot survive on our own. We depend on Allah but Allah is Independent. We need Allah but Allah does not need us, or in fact anybody. He is above that. And if He wanted, He could wipe us out any time. He does not owe us anything but we owe Him everything. Does that put us in our place?

“O you men! It is you that have need of Allah; but Allah
is the One free of all wants, worthy of all praise. If He so
pleased, He could blot you out and bring in a new creation.
And that is not (at all) difficult for Allah.”
(al-Quran 35:15-17)

“If it were Our Will, We could drown them, then
would there be no helper (to hear their cry),
nor could they be delivered.”
(al-Quran 36:43)

We cannot deny the favors and blessings of Allah. On this earth, we owe everything to Him. He is the sole Provider. When He warns the disobedient of His punishment, they say it is ‘cruel’. No, it is not. Allah does not want any cruelty for His slaves. He just reminds us of His mercy and blessings so that we recognize Him, appreciate Him, don’t disobey Him, worship Him and always remember Him.

“If it had been our Will, We could surely have blotted out
their eyes; then should they have run about groping for the
path, but how could they have seen? And if it had been
Our Will, We could have transformed them (to remain) in
their places; then should they have been unable to move
about, nor could they have returned (after error). If We grant
long life to any, We cause him to be reversed in nature.
Will they not then understand?”
(al-Quran 36:66-68)

If we travel in the world, we’ll see the ruins of ancient empires, signs of destruction of the old/earlier kingdoms and towns. These are the signs that have a message for us. The people, more powerful, stronger and more advanced than us, were destroyed when they turned to evil-living; when they revolted and went astray. But most of the times, the Merciful Allah forgives us, giving us time to repent and revert to the right path.

“Do they not travel through the earth, and see what was
the end of those before them, though they were superior
to them in strength? Nor is Allah to be frustrated by
anything whatever in the heavens or on earth, for He is
All-Knowing. All-Powerful. If Allah were to punish men
according to what they deserve. He would not leave on the
back of the (earth) a single living creature. But He gives
them respite for a stated term; when their term expires,
verily Allah has in His sight all His Servants.”
(al-Quran 35:44-45)

“Then We destroyed the rest. Verily, you pass by their
(sites), by day and by night; will you not understand?”
(al-Quran 37:136-138)

We see those signs and ruins when we go visiting places, promoting tourism, but do we think beyond that? Do we read the message written on those ruins of ancient empires? It does not challenge our intellect. On the contrary, it is simple and easy to understand. Read the history of mankind and reflect upon it! Then read the above verses of the Quran and see what Allah is talking about!

The earlier nations denied the Sings/Revelations of Allah; disputed, insulted and some times even killed the messengers of God; rejected the Divine Message; and chose the evil ways. God sent to them the warning signs, gave them enough time to repent and revert, and finally punished them. In our time, we are avoiding, ignoring and even disputing God’s message. We are accepting and promoting atheism/secularism. We even give a blind eye to the warning signs (fires, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, droughts, virus-plagues and other natural disasters). Now, the question is: Are we waiting for the big blast?
“Before them (were many who) rejected messengers – the
people of Noah, and Aad, and Pharaoh, the Lord of Stakes,
and Thamud, and the people of Lot, and the Companions
of the Wood – such were the confederates. Not one (of them)
but rejected the messengers, but My punishment came justly
and inevitably (on them). These (today) only wait for a single
mighty Blast, which (when it comes) will brook no delay.”
(al-Quran 38:12-15)

Allah tells us in many verses of the Holy Quran that life of this world is temporary and is a test for all of us. The real life is in the Hereafter. We should strive for that life during our tenure on this earth by remembering our Creator and by not following the Satan. Satan’s influence can land us in Hell.

“O men! Certainly the promise of Allah is true. Let not
then this present life deceive you, nor let the Chief Deceiver
deceive you about Allah. Verily Satan is an enemy to you,
so treat him as an enemy. He only invites his adherents,
that they may become companions of the Blazing Fire.
For those who reject Allah, is a terrible penalty; but for
those who believe and work righteous deeds,
is forgiveness, and a magnificent reward.”
(al-Quran 35:5-7)

Allah has used the term ‘Chief Deceiver’ for Satan because he always deceives men and betrays them. He is out there to prove that we are not worthy of Paradise. It is up to us now to prove it otherwise, and please our Lord at the same time.

“Say: O you my servants who believe! Fear your Lord,
good is (the reward) for those who do good in this world!
Spacious is Allah's earth! Those who patiently persevere
will truly receive a reward without measure!"
(al-Quran 39:10)

And here is the last warning from our Lord, to Whom belongs everything in the heavens and on earth. This is not only a command but also an excellent piece of advice to all human beings. We better pay attention to it!

"And follow the best of (the courses) revealed to you
from your Lord, before the penalty comes on you
suddenly while you perceive not!”
(al-Quran 39:55)

And what is that “best of courses” that has been revealed to us? It’s the Holy Quran, of course – a Book without a doubt! So, pay attention!

“Here is a Book which We have sent down unto you,
full of blessings, that they may ponder over its revelations,
and that men of understanding may receive admonition.”
(al-Quran 38:29)

"This is no less than a Message to (all) the Worlds. And
you shall certainly know the truth of it (all) after a while."
(al-Quran 38:87-88)

“We have put forth for men, in this Quran every kind
of parable, in order that they may receive admonition.
(It is) a Quran in Arabic, without any crookedness
(therein); in order that they may guard against evil.”
(al-Quran 39:27-28)
