MIRACLE OF THE QURAN

MIRACLE OF THE QURAN

What Cousteau Discovered in 20th Century
Was Revealed By Muhammad (s.a.w.)
Over 1400 Years Ago

(By: M. Javed Naseem)

“It is He (Allah) Who has let free the two bodies of
flowing water: One palatable and sweet, and the other
salty and bitter; yet has He (Allah) made a barrier between
them, a partition that is forbidden to be passed”.
(al-Quran 25:53)

The Holy Quran is not only full of miracles but it is a miracle in itself. In its verses Allah, the Supreme Creator (or God Almighty) has invited all intelligent human beings to ponder over His marvelous creations and gain knowledge. Modern science is discovering slowly the events/objects that have been revealed to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) over 1400 years ago through the Holy Quran.
One of such great miracle is the meeting of two oceans/seas in such a way that they flow side by side, or even within each other, but they don’t mix and mingle. In many places around this world there are two masses of sweet-water and salt-water flowing side by side at the same place but without mixing or mingling with each other – one is in Alaska; the other in Gibraltar where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic Ocean; one in Red Sea and Aden Bay; another in the Indian Ocean; and yet another in Geneva, Switzerland where two rivers meet but don’t mix. On all these tracks, there is a barrier between the two flowing waters that human eye cannot see. Allah-o-Akbar! Glory be to the Supreme Creator!
“Or, Who has made the earth firm to live in;
made rivers in its midst; set thereon mountains immovable; and
made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing water?
(Can there be another) god besides Allah?
Nay, most of them know not.”
(al-Quran 27:61)

The picture above is from Alaska where two seas/waters meet but don’t mix/mingle.
Modern scientist attributes this phenomenon to the high and low density of waters. This was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) through the Holy Quran over 1400 years ago. But the scientists discovered it at the end of the 20th century.
Jacques-Yves Cousteau was a French naval officer, explorer, scientist, ecologist, film-maker, innovator, photographer, author and researcher who studied the sea and all forms of life in water. He pioneered marine conservation and was member of the Academie Francaise. He was also known as “le Commandant Cousteau” or “Captain Cousteau”. He is considered the “greatest oceanographer” of modern times.
Born on 11th June,1910 in St. Andre de Cubzac, France, Jacques-Yves Cousteau co-invented the Aqua-Lung, a breathing device for scuba-diving, in 1943. In 1945, he started the French Navy’s undersea research group. In 1951, he began going on yearly trips to explore the ocean on his ship “Calypso” – a used mine-sweeper. Cousteau recorded his trips on the TV series ‘The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau’. In 1996, the ‘Calypso’ sunk. Cousteau died on 25th June, 1997, in Paris, France.

Quotes by Jacques Cousteau:
"However fragmented the world, however intense the national rivalries, it is an inexorable fact that we become more interdependent every day." – Jacques Cousteau
"From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free." – Jacques Cousteau
"The happiness of the bee and the dolphin is to exist. For man it is to know that and to wonder at it." – Jacques Cousteau
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cousteau did extensive research in the oceans of the earth and every time he was puzzled with the same phenomenon. The two waters did not mix or mingle. He consulted many scientists who did different tests and analysis of these waters in labs. The only logical theory they could come up with, was the “high-density low-density” (or salinity) of the two waters, which was accepted by man.
مَرَجَ ٱلْبَحْرَيْنِ يَلْتَقِيَانِ
بَيْنَهُمَا بَرْزَخٌ لاَّ يَبْغِيَانِ
“He (Allah) has let free the two bodies of flowing water,
meeting together; between them is a barrier
which they do not transgress”.
(al-Quran 55:19-20)

Unfortunately, modern Muslim scientists and scholars did not do much work to prove scientifically the miracles of the Quran. In every chapter of the Holy Quran, the Almighty Creator challenges our intellect and commands us to ponder over His revelations. In so many verses we find the Arabic term “afala ta’qiloon”, which means: Why don’t you ponder? Why don’t you reflect? Why don’t you use your brains? Why don’t you use your head? And we still don’t.
We don’t do research. We love soothing rumors based on wishful thinking. We love to believe that celebrities are attracted to Islam and reverting/converting to Islam. At the same time we, with our shady character, bad manners and opportunistic behavior, offer terrible anti-Islam examples. We are bad models.
Many ‘Muslim’ websites are full of those rumors and un-authentic accounts of celebrities embracing Islam. They are called 'fake conversions'. Jacques Cousteau is one of those personalities. Let me tell you about Jacques Cousteau.
In November 1991, Cousteau gave an interview to the UNESCO Courier, in which he stated that he was in favor of human population control and population decrease. Widely quoted on the internet are these two paragraphs from the interview:
“What should we do to eliminate suffering and disease? It’s a wonderful idea but perhaps not altogether a beneficial one in the long run. If we try to implement it we may jeopardize the future of our species. … It’s terrible to have to say this. World population must be stabilized and to do that we must eliminate 350,000 people per day. This is so horrible to contemplate that we should not even say it. But the general situation in which we are involved is lamentable.”
(Looks like the West is trying to achieve that goal in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Sudan, Somalia, Middle East and Africa.)

Death:

Jacques-Yves Cousteau died of a heart attack on 25th June, 1997, in Paris, aged 87. Despite persistent rumors, encouraged by some Islamic publications and websites, Cousteau did not convert to Islam, and when he died he was buried in a Roman Catholic Christian funeral. He did not have an Islamic funeral. He was buried in the family vault at St.-Andre de Cubzac, in France. An homage was paid to him by the city by the inauguration of a "Rue de Commandant Cousteau", a street which runs out to his native house, where a commemorative plaque was affixed.

Legacy:

Cousteau's legacy includes more than 120 television documentaries, more than 50 books, and an environmental protection foundation with 300,000 members. Cousteau liked to call himself an "oceanographic technician." He was, in reality, a sophisticated showman, teacher, and lover of nature. His work permitted many people to explore the resources of the oceans.
Muslim Claim:
It is claimed that Jacques Cousteau had converted to Islam after witnessing a ‘miracle’ mentioned in the Quran that waters of different salinity do not mix because there is an invisible barrier between the two. Here’s a typical version of the story:

“The famous French oceanographer Jacques Yves Cousteau, who has spent his lifetime on undersea discoveries and is considered an authority on undersea exploration has embraced Islam after his amazing undersea discovery was confirmed by the Holy Quran the last and final revealed guidance of Allah (God Almighty) for the whole of Mankind and Jinns.
One day somewhere in deep ocean, Jacques Yves Cousteau was doing some undersea exploration when he discovered that within the salty sea water there were several springs of sweet palatable water. What amazed him most was the fact that the sweet water of the springs was not mingling with the salty water of the sea. For a long time he tried to find plausible excuse for this phenomena, but to no avail.
One day when he mentioned it to a Muslim Professor who told him this phenomena simply followed Allah's command as clearly explained in the Holy Quran. He then read to Mr. Cousteau the following verses from the Holy Quran.
"It is He (Allah) Who has let free the two bodies of flowing water: One palatable and sweet, and the other salty and bitter; yet has He (Allah) made a barrier between them, a portion that is forbidden to be passed" - (Sura 25 Al-Furqan : Verse 53)
"And He (Allah) made a separating bar between the two bodies of flowing waters." - (Sura 27 An-Naml : Verse 61)
"He (Allah) let free the two bodies of flowing water, meeting together: between them is a barrier which they do not transgress." - (Sura 55 Al-Rahman : Verse 19:20)
Hearing this, Mr Cousteau said that surely the Quran is a divine Book and embraced Islam. (This was reported in Al-Furqan-Ta-Ha Publishers, London).

Cousteau Society:

The Cousteau Society (originally named the "Cousteau Foundation" until 1992) was founded by Jacques-Yves Cousteau himself and is currently chaired by his second wife Francine Cousteau. The following letter of clarification (dated 1991) from Didier Cerceau of the Cousteau Society emphatically states that Cousteau did not convert to Islam. Note that this is an official communication made by Cousteau's Foundation and he did not repudiate it.

Sir, We have received your letter and we thank you for your interest in our activities. We state precisely to you that Commander Cousteau has not become a Muslim and that this rumor passes around without foundation.
Very cordially,
Didier CERCEAU
chargé de mission

Cousteau's Family denies:

Forbes magazine reported in May 18, 2004, that, despite the persistence of the rumor in the Muslim world, Cousteau's family has "denied it often".
For decades, as the pioneer of systematic underwater exploration, inventor of the Aqua-Lung and the leading exponent of preserving the sea's ecology, Jacques Cousteau was a global media hero. His documentaries of his trips under the oceans were seen wherever TV existed. In the Muslim world, the rumor still endures that he converted to Islam before he died, although his family has respectfully denied it often. His popularity extended through the Soviet and Chinese communist bloc where it endures through TV reruns. On a recent trip through the Caspian Sea, "crowds of people ran out to wave at the Alcyone (the new ship) wherever it went," says Francine.

Cousteau Quote and scientific research:

The following text has been spread widely on the internet and supposedly quotes Cousteau saying that he "chose" Islam after studying that different oceans did not mix together, something which "the Quran talks about".
“In 1962 German scientists said that the waters of the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean did not mix with each other in the Strait of Bab-ul-Mandab where the Aden Bay and the Red Sea join. So we began to examine whether the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean mixed with each other. First we analyzed the water in the Mediterranean to find out its natural salinity and density, and the life it contained. We repeated the same procedure in the Atlantic Ocean. The two masses of water had been meeting each other in the Gibraltar for thousands of years. Accordingly, the two masses of water must have been mixing with each other and they must have been sharing identical, or, at least, similar properties in salinity and density. On the contrary, even at places where the two seas were closest to each other, each mass of water preserved its properties. In other words, at the point where the two seas met, a curtain of water prevented the waters belonging to the two seas from mixing. When I told Professor Maurice Bucaille about this phenomenon, he said that it was no surprise and that it was written clearly in Islam's Holy Book, the Quran al-karim. Indeed, this fact was defined in a plain language in the Quran al-karim. When I knew this, I believed in the fact that the Quran al-karim was the 'Word of Allah'. I chose Islam, the true religion. The spiritual potency inherent in the Islamic religion gave me the strength to endure the pain I had been suffering for the loss of my son.”
This quote has been taken from "The Reasons Why They Become Muslims", a series of Turkish books printed by the Islamic publishing house “Waqf Ikhlas Publications”, and is not attributed to Cousteau by any reliable source.
Conclusion:
The only quote attributed to Cousteau concerning this issue originates from an Islamic publication that aims to propagate Islam, and is not attributed to Cousteau by any reliable neutral sources.
The Cousteau Society founded by Jacques-Yves Cousteau himself denied the rumor, a denial which came in the form of an official communication that Cousteau felt no need to repudiate even though he had the time and authority to do so.
His family has respectfully denied there is any truth behind the rumor on several occasions, and he was also buried in a Roman Catholic Christian funeral, leaving no evidence whatsoever to suggest he converted or even considered converting to Islam.
